Level 2 Semester 1 Food Packaging Practical Course - B.Sc. in Food Engineering (Session 2020-21)

Introduction:

As part of our academic curriculum, we, the students of the Level 2 Semester 1 Food Packaging Practical Course, B.Sc. in Food Engineering (Session 2020-21), had the opportunity to visit Xclusive Can Limited, a leading food packaging company in Bangladesh. The tour was organized and guided by our respected department head, Dr. Afzal Rahman, and our course teacher, Professor Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar. The objective of the tour was to gain practical knowledge and exposure to the various aspects of food packaging production and quality control.

Guidelines and Safety:

Before entering the premises of Xclusive Can Limited, we were given some essential safety guidelines to follow during the tour. We were instructed to wear protective gear such as helmets, gloves, and masks, and to avoid touching any machinery or equipment without permission. We were also advised to maintain a safe distance from the machines and to be attentive to the instructions given by the employees.

Tour Highlights:

The tour consisted of visiting different sections of the company, where we observed the following processes and equipment:

  • Workshop 1: This section was dedicated to the production of ringt leads, coil stand making machines, and die of hand bleeders from tin sheets. These components are used for making cans and other metal containers for food packaging.
  • Workshop 2: This section showcased various machining processes such as latch machines, shaper machines, vertical milling machines, grill milling machines, surface grinder machines, wet coat machines, wear coat machines, CNC machines, EDF machines, square shape machines, and electric discharge machines. These processes are used for shaping, cutting, coating, and finishing the metal parts for packaging. We also learned about the use of cutting oil and welding machines in this section.
  • Assembly Section: This section involved the assembly of packaging materials using both manpower and machines. We witnessed how different parts such as lids, handles, labels, and seals are attached to the containers. We also saw how the containers are tested for leaks using vacuum leakage testing machines.
  • Packaging Material Production: This section displayed the manufacturing of packaging materials such as ice cream boxes for popular companies such as Polar and Unilever. These materials are made from virgin P and PP chemicals, which are safe and hygienic for food storage.
  • Laboratory Visit: The final section of the tour was the laboratory, where we observed various equipment used for testing and ensuring the quality of the packaging materials. Some of the equipment we saw were NDJ5s Viscometers, digital calipers, gloss meters, electric ovens, Precisa weight machines, heat seal testers, fridges, and metal flow index testers. These instruments measure various parameters such as viscosity, thickness, glossiness, temperature, weight, seal strength, moisture content, and melt flow rate of the materials.

Certificates and Achievements:

We were informed that Xclusive Can Limited has obtained several certificates and awards for its excellence in food packaging production and quality control. Some of the certificates we saw were certificate of conformance and certificate of registration from ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 standards. These certificates demonstrate that the company follows international best practices and meets customer requirements.

Questions and Answers:

At the end of the tour, we were given a chance to ask any questions we had about the company or its products. We asked about various topics such as employee safety, contamination prevention, microplastic issues, and job opportunities. The employees answered our questions patiently and satisfactorily.

Conclusion:

The industrial tour was a valuable learning experience for us as it enhanced our theoretical knowledge with practical exposure. We gained insights into the different stages of food packaging production and quality testing processes. We also appreciated the professionalism and expertise of the employees at Xclusive Can Limited. We are grateful to Dr. Afzal Rahman, Professor Mrs. Dr. Poly Karmokar, and Xclusive Can Limited for arranging this enriching tour for us.
